Hearing the Voice of God — the Creator of the Universe — has always been interesting to articulate, especially because though God is the same eternally and never changes, He has created people in His image who He made uniquely different, yet at the same time, collectively similar. The quirks, characteristics and qualities that differentiate us play a huge part in the plethora of ways that we hear from God because this ability is not in the slightest bit cookie cutter when considering the adult’s — who has grown in stature, experience and worldly wisdom — point of view.
Children have rarely been considered as being old or mature enough to hear God speak, safe for the example we have in the Bible of Samuel. However, progression in the faith begs to differ on this stance because we are always coming into deeper revelations, the wisdom to understand and ability to rightly interpret things formerly unknown and mysteries formerly kept secret. One of such hidden things is that children do in truth, have in them the capacity to hear God speak.
When I was a little girl, I’d hear a voice that I couldn’t put a face or name to like I could my family. This voice was more of a thought in the midst of other thoughts in my mind. And because my mind housed these thoughts, I thought they were my own thoughts. In my naughtiness, I rarely heeded this thought-voice because I chose to listen to the other voices speaking the wrong opposite to me. So I continued in that way as I grew older, went into the world and was worldly. Till God allowed me get to the end of myself, emptied me of me, started to fill me up with His Word and tell me about Him. In doing so, He enabled me receive His Son and introduced me to His Spirit. Tell me why when He started speaking to me and confirming that I could hear Him, it was with that same thought-voice?! Turns out He was always speaking, I just didn’t know Him experientially. And because I didn’t know Him experientially, I didn’t heed His voice.
I would always hear people say sometimes that they wish they’d began an intimate relationship with God from childhood. More than wishing myself, I wanted to give language to children because I was that little girl who possessed the gift of hearing God speak and who ignored His voice. But He chose to put an unshakeable burden for children in me and this made me want better for them. So He literally sat me down against my will to write about my experience with Him — knowing at the time, that I didn’t quite like writing if it wasn’t a song or at most, a blog. I didn’t have the full picture then, but He enabled me and I heeded after much disobedience. I free fell into Him as He brought me into remembrance, flowed and funnelled through my finger tips, what has now become “Best Friends with Holy Spirit” book series.
